Spring Updates from WEA

Spring is a busy season for the WEA as we continue to work closely with administration and our members to address important issues and improve working conditions. This update highlights recent contract changes, ongoing committee work, and upcoming opportunities for involvement. Staying informed and engaged will help all members make the most of these developments.

Regular Meetings and Member Input

Your executive board meets twice a month to discuss pressing matters and plan next steps. The second meeting each month includes building representatives, creating a direct line of communication between members and leadership. This structure ensures your questions, concerns, and ideas reach the team promptly.

If you have anything you want to bring up, whether it’s a concern about workload, contract details, or general feedback, please share it with an Executive Board officer or your building representative. This is the best way to make sure your voice is heard and your needs are met as we move forward.

Updates to Schedule C Stipends

One significant outcome from the last round of bargaining involves Schedule C stipends. Your negotiations team worked closely with building administrators to update these stipends, which cover additional responsibilities and roles beyond regular teaching duties.

There are both large and small changes in this section of the contract. Some stipends have increased to better reflect the work involved, while others have been adjusted for clarity or fairness. It is important to review this section carefully so you understand how these changes might affect you.

If you are involved in any Schedule C roles, such as coaching or club advising, take a moment to check the updated stipend amounts and requirements. Knowing these details helps you plan your commitments.

Special Education Committee Formed

For our special education colleagues, a new committee has been created as part of contract negotiations. This group focuses on workload and specific needs within the special education department.

If you have concerns or suggestions related to your work in special education, please contact Claire Thomas or Peggy Meurer. They will bring your input to the committee, which aims to find practical solutions and improve conditions for everyone involved.

This committee represents a valuable opportunity to influence changes that directly affect your daily work and student support.

Important Dates and Information

  • The WEA has addressed early release professional development days and closures with administration. While we have no news to share at this time the WEA did ask that early release days turn into a delayed opening where possible or a cancelation for students but work day for staff.

  • The last day of school for all students and K-8 staff is confirmed as June 22.

  • The last day for WHS staff is confirmed as June 23.

  • The WEA sick bank remains available to all members. This resource can cover extra days needed for FMLA or personal illness, providing peace of mind during challenging times.

  • The WEA continues to address building specific concerns. For building specific updates please contact your building executive board officer or Peggy.

  • Your WEA members of the PEAL Committee emphasised during their March meeting that administrators need to be held accountable to providing meaningful and timely feedback.

  • Our WEA Retirement Party will be Thursday, May 28th at Nod Hill. Formal invitations to follow!

Elections, Scholarships, and Member Involvement

Spring also brings opportunities to get involved beyond your daily work. Elections for union positions will take place soon, and scholarships will be available for members and their families.

Participating in elections helps shape the direction of the union and ensures leadership reflects the priorities of members. Applying for scholarships can provide valuable financial support for continuing education or family needs.

Getting involved strengthens the union and increases its ability to make meaningful changes. Whether you run for a position, vote, or encourage others to participate, your engagement matters.
